Vidya Galande

March 2018

Vidya Galande (18) is from Pulkoti, an area in Maharashtra plagued by constant drought. Her family ekes out a meager living from working on their land. She is one of six siblings. While Vidya was participating in our Life skills and Financial Literacy training, we learned that she was very keen to be an athlete. In fact, she was particularly passionate about Kho-kho and Kabbadi.  Immediately, she was enrolled in the Mann Deshi Champions programme, which is specially designed to nurture and train talented young athletes from the Mann region.

She had a wonderful time – joining a community of young people who trained together every day, went on weekly treks and helped promote sports and fitness in the surrounding villages. She took part and excelled in several local competitions. She also opened her own bank account, something that makes her especially proud.

Around this time, Vidya became interested in joining the police force. She is now training hard to get ready for the intense physical screening test. We wish her all the luck and are glad to have supported her pursue her passion!
